American Dental Association FAQs
February 21, 2017
Have you ever wondered how dentistry is regulated? Or perhaps you’ve seen the “ADA accepted” logo on your toothpaste container and you want to know what that’s about. Here are a few frequently asked questions about The American Dental Association (ADA).
What is the American Dental Association (ADA)?
The ADA is America’s largest dental association with over 161,000 members from all 50 states as well as Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. It is run by an elected Board of Trustees and House of Delegates.
What are the main functions of the ADA?
- It provides a comprehensive array of accurate information to dentists and patients about various dental topics
- Dentists can join the association and receive member benefits like discounts on ADA products, insurance plans, travel costs, and accreditation.
- The ADA Foundation provides scholarships for dental students, advocates for children’s dental health, provides disaster relief to members in need and other philanthropic practices.
What is the ADA Seal of Acceptance?
The ADA is the gold standard for evaluating dental products. Oral care companies submit detailed, data from meticulous clinical or lab studies testing the product’s safety and efficacy as well as pay a large submission fee. They receive a notification in writing from the ADA and can then begin to include the “ADA accepted” logo on their products, increasing consumer trust and investment in the product.
