Should You Get Dental Implants?

October 26, 2017
The problem of missing teeth is one that needs to be addressed. For many people, one or more missing teeth are a source of embarrassment, and may make them feel self-conscious; and a full set of teeth also means a healthier mouth.

Dental implants have become very popular over recent years. This is due to the fact that they are very sturdy since the prosthetic teeth are mounted on titanium posts that are placed directly into the jawbone. And, they can be brushed and flossed just like natural teeth. Most people will have no problem with implants, but before you decide to move ahead with the process, you should have a talk with your dentist about your habits, your lifestyle and your health.

For implants to be successful, your gums need to be in good shape and you need enough jawbone for the titanium posts. Implants, and if you have hemophilia, you may want to consider another procedure. If you have issues with your immune system or take immunosuppressants, implants may not be for you. If you have had radiation therapy for your neck and head, or uncontrolled diabetes, you should talk with your dentist about other tooth replacement options.

One of the most important factors in the success of your implants is your commitment. You must be willing to follow your dentist’s postoperative instructions and keep your follow-up appointments. If you do not intend to brush, floss and see your dentist on a regular basis, or you intend to keep using tobacco or recreational drugs, you might want to explore another procedure.

Even if you are not a good candidate for implants, there are other replacement options such as bridges and dentures. If you need to fill in the spaces in your smile, our dentist will be happy to meet with you and discuss your options.
